Here’s a jarring statistic: More than half of Americans don’t take all of their paid vacation each year. Moreover, I found it relevant to the workplaces of those we interact with in our practice.Įxample: the first rule intuitively sounds wrong. Shouldn’t we be passionate about our jobs? Try actually saying “I’m going to be less passionate about my job” out loud. First, to myself, and then to my workplace. Most of the examples in the book are in the context of much larger work settings than my small five-person CPA/financial planning firm nevertheless, I found it very applicable. The authors have set out the 7 New Rules of Emotion at Work: In addressing this truth, No Hard Feelings: The Secret Power of Embracing Emotions at Workby Liz Fosslien and Mollie West Duffy is insightful, humorous, and actionable.

It just makes sense that embracing this truth must happen. Nothing good can come of ignoring emotions… ignoring our own humanity and everyone else’s. On the other hand, we are human beings that do in fact have and are affected by emotions-both our own and the emotions of others. More broadly speaking, however, it’s long been my perception that there’s a cultural encouragement to leave emotions at home you’re told not to bring them into your office/work setting before you ever start your first job. It seems that the general perception of a CPA firm is that it might be pretty short on soft skills-and there’s probably some truth to that!
